Washburn High School conducts a preliminary contest at the Methodist church to select two pupils for the Western division contest in Superior on April 19. Orations by Thomas Kearns Clifford Wescott and Robert McDonald. declamations by Fern Sweezy Carrie Alvord Anna Cookier Irene Walsh.

Warden Re-elected Municipal Judge of Bayfield County

Judge A M Warden won Tuesday to extend his 12 year tenure as Bayfield county Municipal Judge for four more years from May 1. George F Morgan conceded after heavy outside town margins, carrying Iron River Oulu Port Wing and Drummond. Frank Rowe of Ashland died last week. F E Boss of the Amazon Investment Co visited the city regarding county land holdings. head office is in Detroit Michigan.

Circuit Court Special Term Trials Lead Off

Judge A J Vinje presides over a special term in this city with multiple old criminal cases. Morris prosecutes as John Kelene is convicted of assault with intent to harm H A Robinson and jailed four months. Lizzie Le Bear’s bond is forfeited for failure to appear. Albert Otto pleads guilty to stealing a $250 diamond stud and receives one to two years in Green Bay Reform School. Soulier case ongoing as court adjournment looms tonight.

No Morning Service at Methodist Church Next Sunday

There will be no morning service at the Methodist church next Sunday. Sunday school and the evening service will be held at their usual hours. Mr. Wm. Sloan of Ashland will preach at the evening service and Mrs. Sloan will sing.

Church services are planned for next Sunday morning and evening with Sunday school at noon. Mrs. Pelke died at her home last Friday evening and the funeral was held from the Catholic church on Monday morning. F R Preston has moved his land office to the Metropolitan Life Building in Minneapolis. Assemblyman Clausen is returning from Madison soon with Mrs Clausen and Miss Florence. his health remains poor for the upcoming session.

Town Elections Show Narrow Results Across County

County towns held hard fought contests with several leaders unseated. Bayfield’s Henry Wachsmuth lost to O L Shepherd, Port Wing reelected Erick Johnson by seven, and Mason backed Ben Holm over Norman Campbell by seven votes. Washburn elected Mike Thorson unopposed. other towns chose new clerks, treasurers, and chairmen.

Coal Prices Fall on First Day of April

On April 1 the price of hard coal nationwide dropped fifty cents per ton to 6.75. The report notes a likely further reduction in summer. Examinations for Teacher Certificates Held at Pioneer School

About thirty wrote for teacher certificates during examinations conducted at the Pioneer School by County Superintendent Miss Jessie N. Smith. Twenty-five local teachers and five from nearby areas attended, many rural educators and several senior high students. Out-of-town participants included Signa Carlson Miss Merrigan Miss Olson Mason Mathilda Sedin Fish Creek and Howard Gesell Shell Lake.

Bates Wins First Ward Supervisor Race By 29 Votes

Luther Bates defeats E Bryan for the first ward supervisor position by 70 votes to 41 out of 111 ballots. This ward is the only one facing opposition while all other incumbents ran unopposed for re election.
