Washburn voters elected six aldermen and six supervisors in an off year contest dominated by license questions. Nels Martinson lost re election to Ole Thoreson by one vote in the 5th ward, as totals show varied margins across wards with 489 total votes and 18 from women on school questions.
City supervisors by ward listed with names and ages: 1st ward I Berman 86. 2nd ward T H Robinson 35 and F W Downs 30. 8th ward George Mertz 59. 4th ward Ole Hamburg 43 and J P Lindsey 28. 5th ward Ole Dahl 45. 6th ward Thomas Lamoreaux 33.
The county elected new chairmen in numerous towns including Barksdale, Barnes, Bayfield, Bell, Cable, Clover, Drummond, Hileen, Iron River, Lincoln, Mason, Orienta, Oulu, Pilsen, Port Wing, Pratt, Trippe, and Washburn. Contests occurred in only a few towns.
Bayfield selects Pickett as town chairman by 212 to 122 over Emil Swanson. James Long is reappointed town clerk.
C F Bogenrief defeats A P Stone to lead Washburn as chairman with Ed Anderson I J Sten as supervisors and John Bart ness as treasurer. New clerk M S Miller, constable John Stone Peter Molnan, and J Bjork named justice of the peace. The school board hires all current teachers and estimates a levy of 25000 for next year to cover higher enrollment and costs.
City officials consider leasing public property in the clerk’s office amid council debate. Mayor and council members weigh economic benefits against policy concerns and public access.
Bayfield County Bank proposes leasing the City Clerk’s front rooms in the City Building for five years at 25 dollars monthly with a five year extension. Mayor Peavey supports the plan citing projected savings and service shifts as council debates the deal amid wet and dry election tensions.
A Washburn Gun Club meeting is called for Monday evening April 7 at the Commercial Club. All persons interested in the organization are asked to attend.
H P Axelberg of this city was elected County Judge of Bayfield County on Tuesday by over forty votes more than any other candidate. A M Warden ran a close second with W E Tripp third and W H Irish fourth. A table below shows vote totals for County Judge and State Superintendent of Schools.
The Washburn High School preliminary oratorical and declamatory contest will be held Friday at the Congregational Church to select representatives for division contests at Hayward and Superior. Five contestants perform orations and five perform declamations with judges Mrs. Farmer Miss Alice Sprague and Rev. H C Rehm.
Talks rise of a new baseball league for Chequemegon Bay towns. Washburn Bayfield Ashland and Odanah managers plan a Sunday meeting to discuss formation and steps toward organization in coming weeks.
Captain Doherty of the Str. Mary Scott was in the city last Friday distributing time cards for the 1913 season. He has begun painting the boat and preparing to launch as soon as ice clears the bay. He did not estimate a navigation opening date. Snow is melting with April showers.
The Gem Theatre will show motion pictures of the Omaha Tornado and the Day ton Floods on April 20 and 27 in addition to the regular program. Manager Burt Harrington secured these early date films for Washburn audiences to view.
The M. A. Sprague family will relocate to their new residence on the farm east of the city within the week or by early next week.
