Seaman John Edwards was badly burned while trying to extinguish an engine room fire aboard the ketch Broughton in St. Vincent Gulf. He jumped overboard to escape flames, was rescued by crew, and taken to hospital in serious condition as the vessel sailed to Port Adelaide under its own power.
