Tragic Train Incident Ends in Fatal Shooting and Flight
An excursion train from Spartansburg to Charlotte, North Carolina, ended with two deaths and a likely serious wounding of a third. On approach to Spartansburg a Black man caused a disturbance in a car reserved for whites. Dexter Kirby, acting as a public safety officer, pressed Haynes to display his item. Haynes refused, threatening to shout. Kirby advanced and Haynes shot him in the chest, killing him. Friends of Kirby then attacked the assailant aboard the train. The assailant was shoved from the car onto the ground below the Thicketty trestle, a ninety foot drop, where his body lay.
