Town council preserves grove over debt in Maine
Notes by the Way recount a Maine town in Franklin County loyal to its pine grove beside the public highway. Facing debt, the council declined a lumberman’s bid to buy the trees, choosing to protect the town’s chief pride and seek other ways to raise funds, urging readers to value beauty over mere dollars. It also shares various digressions on Foster and other public figures, plus brief notes on congressional personalities and a forestry bulletin about Catalpa Speciosa.
