Five derelicts perished in a morning blaze at the Eagle Hotel on South State Street. Six others were seriously burned as flames swept a four story building with crowded rear rooms lacking exits. Fire Marshal Dillon pledged an inquiry and blamed an owner for the deadly trap.
New York Oct 23. The threatened nationwide walkout of 55000 workers from the International Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks at American Railway Express Company was averted after amicable settlement last night. L A Gwyn vice president and George M Harrison president of the Brotherhood announced the terms following a conference.
Edmund Himmler, 65, a white whiskered mechanic, pulled a pistol in the last car of a Second Avenue L train and shot himself, causing a run of panic among other passengers on the New York line.
Washington October report predicts a record presidential turnout with registration surging nationwide. Women voters expected to cast ballots more than before as both parties push to mobilize supporters. Estimates place total votes from 35 million to 40 million, well above 1924 levels. Britain will attempt to reach Mars via radio this week and a psychic student seeks government help to send a message at thirty six cents a word. The five word message could earn $1.80, and a Martian reply is unlikely. Also Baltimore notes a miracle as seven year old James Barlage survives after being hit by a track thanks to a pack of Governor Smyth posters used as a shield. Continued on Page Three.
The Life Study Club at the Y M C A will hold its season opening meeting Tuesday evening. Floyd Bathurst, Warren High School principal, will lead a discussion on voting in the November election with questions prepared by the board of governors. About two hundred reservations for dinner at 6 30 were received by noon Monday.
Harold C. Putnam, newly elected commander of the Chile Cornplanted Post American Legion, starts his administration with a membership drive. He was elected and installed Monday night and soon formed captains for the drive: Schmocker, Davis, Cannon, Johnson, Swanson, Milenius, Walker, and Davis. Donald E. McComas directs the effort as 16 district posts join Warren post for Armistice Day observances. Ben Kinnear, outgoing commander, pledges to complete unfinished business including the suit against the Warren County Agricultural association. The meeting followed an oyster stew supper.
Three Warren service clubs and five allied organizations will hold a joint meeting in Warren Wednesday to hear the annual report of the Crippled Children Committee. A luncheon precedes the Rotary Kiwanis Zonta and Red Cross gathering. F A Steber presides with remarks by Dr. A G Davis of Erie and Miss Frances Shirley of the Industrial Home for Crippled Children Pittsburgh.
In Reading Pennsylvania a kerosene stove exploded fatally injuring a twenty month old boy named Malcolm Gen try. His mother Mrs Overton Gen try, in a hysterical state, tossed him from a second story window and leaped out herself. Firemen rescued her as bystanders fainted. the child died hours later at a hospital. The husband and another son escaped unharmed. the blaze damaged only the ONE Foyt.
President Coolidge said the Ango French failure to reach a naval agreement makes a second armaments conference before 1931 unlikely. British and French papers condemn diplomacy revealed by the White Paper and the secret pact, arguing disarmament has been set back.
A rear end crash between North Warren and Jamestown trolley cars near Warren and Venture town startled nine aboard the North Warren car and three or four in the Jamestown car. Both vehicles were damaged, with air lines and windows broken in the North Warren car, service resumed to Jamestown by 9 o clock. Officials blamed a stop on the North Warren car and close following distance, with no injuries reported.
In Cleveland on October 28 1930 rumors of a Graselli Chemical Company merger with Dupont were confirmed. Details were not released but it was understood the plan calls for Dupont to acquire Graselli assets via stock exchange. Dupont assets near 400 million while Graselli assets exceed 50 million.
Fifteen federal prisoners were en route to the federal prison at Atlanta to begin serving terms from recent court rulings. United States Marshal J. C. Mc Gregor led a squad of deputies in guiding the group, which included Robert G. Haberkorn, a former Johnstown bank teller who pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from the bank.
Pittsburgh October 24 John D Pennington prohibition administrator for the Pittsburgh district appeared before the Allegheny county grand jury in its graft probe of city officials He testified for 35 minutes and tied the county inquiry to a federal grand jury investigation that led to indictments of 167 persons on liquor law violations Frayne assistant to Pennington was expected to be called tomorrow by the jurors.
Warren plans to perpetuate Donald McAlpine’s memory by naming the Warren airport after him. Dedicatory ceremonies are expected on Armistice Day at the riverfront site, with possible relocation after consultations. Local leaders discuss forming a stock corporation to establish the airfield, guided by Commerce Department field standards.
Beverly Hills report on a U S Supreme Court decision affecting Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Veteran prospector George Carson, long seeking pay dirt, expects a fortune from the ruling estimated in the millions. Carson plans to fund new patents and continue mining ventures.
Hoover attacks Smith and his Democratic rivals on prohibition, farm relief, and electrical power plans. Speaking before a Madison Square Garden crowd, he denounces state purchase of liquor, government buys and sells agricultural goods, and government involvement in hydroelectric power. In Central City Pennsylvania on October 24 1918 two children Catherine Sass 5 and Joseph Sass 3 died after eating toadstools mistaken for mushrooms. Their mother Mrs Michael Sass and another child Andrew 10 were stricken critically ill. The family had gathered the fungi in nearby woods and cooked and ate them.
In Columbia on October 23 an automobile struck a pile of railroad ties, overturning and killing one man while injuring two others. Dr. G P Taylor assistant coroner of Lancaster county cited intoxication of the driver, John T Miles 47 of Columbia, as the cause. Miles was instantly killed.
