Mellon cites GOP gains in Hoover address radio appeal

Washington October 12 Secretary of the Treasury Mellon in a radio address reviewed Republican administration achievements since 1921 and urged the election of Herbert Hoover. He said taxes have been lowered four times expenditures cut and the public debt reduced, though some localities industries and individuals do not share equally in prosperity. In Madrid the Duke of Tetuan the Spanish minister of war died at his home near Madrid.

Western Union to grant wage increase and extra vacation

The French submarine Ondine with three officers and 39 men was struck and sunk on October 3 at 11 p.m. by the Greek ship Ekaterina Coulanderis opposite Oporto in the Atlantic. France reports little hope for survivors as warships survey the 260 foot deep site. recovery gear will take four to five days.

Coast Guard Cutter Smith Feared Lost After Gale

San Francisco October 12 reports say the Coast Guard cutter Smith with 13 aboard was believed lost off Point Arena after a terrible gale. A 9 30 P M radio distress said the ship was sinking and communications were intermittent through midnight.

Hurried Pittsburgh trip saves Warren baby from pin

Three youths jailed for life in Allegheny murder case

In Allegheny County Court Judge James H. Gray sentenced three youths aged 16 to 19 to life imprisonment for first degree murder at the Western Penitentiary. Michael Ferraro 16 Henry Constanza 19 and Lloyd Moore 18 received life terms, while Joseph Ferraro 18 was given two to 15 years in the workhouse.

West Grove Fire Devastates Mill Work Plant in Massive Blaze

West Grove Pennsylvania October 12. A major fire swept the town inflicting about 500000 dollars in damage. The West Grove Mill Work and Lumber Co was destroyed along with five houses, river of smoke blanketed the area as twenty two fire companies from Pennsylvania and Delaware fought the blaze. Water supply cut off hampered progress until quarry water was obtained. Twenty hospital patients including five newborns were moved to nearby institutions in commandeered cars as firefighters saved the mill with minor damage.

Pittsburgh furrier ends life at wife’s grave

Morris Rosenblum a 56 year old wealthy Pittsburgh furrier, despondent over his wife’s death three months earlier, shot himself in the head today at her grave. The tragedy occurred in Pittsburgh on October 12.
