Bath tragedy prompts national alarm over school fire

In Bath Michigan Andrew E. Kehoe, a 30 year old farmer, killed his wife and arsonized farm buildings before dynamiting Bath Consolidated School. The blast killed 41 people including 36 children, with more adults injured. Governor Green urged Red Cross aid as the town faced rebuilding and financial hardship from taxes tied to the new school.

Vessel Diana Harbor Goes Aground Off California Coast

San Francisco May 19. Captain G Olsen and a crew of 25 aboard the steamship Indiana Harbor are aground at Point Gorda 185 miles north of San Francisco. The vessel departed with a general cargo for Portland Oregon. The steamship Haruzaki has responded to distress, a rescue boat from the Alumboldt coast guard station has launched, and two tugs from San Francisco have moved north to try to free the vessel which is leaking and grounding hard in heavy seas.

Police arrest suspect in Wise theft case and theft charges

John Lewis, arrested for stealing 1175 from Dr. F B Wise, accuses Alfred Kane, a missing York policeman, of planning the robbery and taking half the loot. Lewis claims Kane helped him escape after the crime. Regional games, Cincinnati Philadelphia and Chicago Brooklyn, postponed by rain.

Three Trainmen Die in Boiler Explosion Near Coatesville

On May 19 a locomotive boiler exploded near Coatesville killing three trainmen and seriously injuring a fourth. The victims were engineer David Comer, fireman Rider, brakeman C I Sharp, all identified with the Harrisburg area. Flagman J B Anderson, also of Harrisburg, was badly scalded. The train was moving slowly at 10 mph. cause remains undetermined.

Famous dancer Maurice Mouvet dead at Lausanne

Lausanne reports Maurice Mouvet, famed dancer, died last night after months of illness. He rose to fame in Paris and began his career in that city. Government to examine Karl Carroll in Greenville, D C, after a nervous breakdown en route to Atlanta penitentiary to serve a one year sentence for perjury. A government physician from Atlanta will likely be detailed for Carroll’s examination.

Fire destroys Thiel College science building in Greenville

In Greenville on May 19 the old Greenville Ball, the science building of Thiel College, burned with an estimated loss of about 25000 dollars. Officials believe the blaze started in the physics fight room, discovered by student Henry Muntz. The second and third floors were gutted, most equipment ruined by smoke and water, the 1870 original campus structure may be rebuilt since its four walls remain sound.

Susquehanna Claims First Canoe Victim

The body of Alice Boose, 19, the season's first canoeing fatality, was recovered from the Susquehanna River twelve hours after the accident that killed her. Boose, a telephone operator, drowned when the canoe carrying Grace Stucky Harrisburg, Thomas C. Moore Pittsburgh, and Clarence Barker Erie overturned shortly before 5 p.m. yesterday.

Allegiance Oath Administered to 24 New Citizens

Twenty four applicants for citizenship appeared in Naturalization Court in session at 10 o clock. Judge Arird administered the oath of allegiance to the United States after preliminary exams by a Buffalo federal examiner. New citizens received a U S manual and a small flag from Harriet Eaton of the DAR. Names listed include Antonio Sivi and others from Italy Denmark Sweden Poland Czechoslovakia Austria and Turkey among Warren Conewango and surrounding towns.

A Western Pennsylvania forecast shows cooling tonight with a front moving across the region. Low pressure dominates much of the country, bringing cloudy and showery conditions. Thunderstorms and heavy rains affect western Pennsylvania and neighboring states while a second low-pressure system extends from British Columbia to Texas, pinning western mountain areas under clouds and rain. High pressure along the Canadian border shifts conditions east, cooling the plains and Mississippi Valley.
