In Darlington England a fast excursion train carrying 200 passengers collides head on with a freight train. Two dead and dozens injured, many women and children among the victims. Rescue workers cut through wreckage as hospitals rush patients. Government probes Thaw visa case follows.
Secretary of the Treasury Mellon tentatively decided on a two week trip to Europe this summer. He would likely depart July 12 and return around August 15 to be back before the active Republican presidential convention begins.
The 1923 New York American notes France returning to gold and silver coins after wartime depreciation. It praises Poincare and French statesmen for stabilizing the franc and ending a decade of financial disorder, while an Italian message honors aviator Lieutenant Einar Lundbergh. Dr John MacLachlan of Cleveland sped to Hartford to treat seven months old Virginia Scofield suffering influenza and suspected strep throat poisoning. A New York Central passenger train struck a Warren County Dairy association roadster on Fifth Avenue and East Street. The driver Wendell Hornstrom, 514 Pinspect Street, jumped clear as the engine neared, saving his life though the car was carried 25 feet and heavily damaged. The crossing incident occurred at 7 30 AM as a crowd gathered.
The report chronicles remarks by Rogers claiming Tammany Hall has more funds than the Engineers' Club amid campaign discussions. Lieutenant Arthur Gavin in the Navy PN-12 No. 2 reportedly raised a seaplane altitude record to about 20,000 feet with a useful load of 1,000 kilograms. The previous Swiss record stood just over 19,000 feet. Gavin had earlier set a record of 18,000 feet with a war load of 2,000 kilograms. Freehold township supervisors appealed for county aid to rebuild a cement bridge over Deer Creek near Lottsville after flooding washed out foundations and dropped the structure ten feet into the creek bed. Route 88 traffic between Lottsville and Bear Lake was halted. Supervisors Sears Morton Jamieson met with county commissioners Brady Stewart and Olney to seek financial assistance, noting the township is near the bonding limit and already plans a 20 mill road tax. Estimated repair costs run to several thousand dollars for the two miles north of Lottsville.
James W. Good, Hoover's pre-convention manager, said the western campaign headquarters will open in Chicago in late July or August. He will run the office for all states west of Pennsylvania while Rep. Walter Newton of Minnesota leads the midwestern speakers bureau.
Houston June 28. Democratic National Convention aims to nominate Al Smith for president and pick a vice president. Smith manager George R Van Namee says all work can finish today with platform discussion and nominations by night. Several candidates listed, including Hull and Jones, with a strong prohibition plank expected.
The Houston convention diary notes Moody calling for an absolute prohibition plank while the full committee backs the adopted platform. A foreign policy declaration covers Nicaragua and Mexico with Boulder Canyon Dam support and a general farm relief stance. Moody may file a minority report to push a tougher plank on the floor.
