Trapping Black Bear Led by Chain At Pot ter County

July 25. Trapping black bears in Potter County and leading them on a chain is an exciting sport for experts says trapping instructor Harry Van Cleve of the state vermin control bureau. The method, used for smaller bears, involves ropes on the feet, a collar and chain, and a stick to prompt the bear before guiding it with the chain, with a heavy club for defense if needed. The practice has been used since 1922 to handle bears and prevent more damage as beech nut crops fail. Bears weighing up to 150 pounds have been managed without casualties, though the work remains dangerous and requires skill and speed. Potter County bears have been trapped and transported to other states, with 100 animals moved in 1920-22 by Van Cleve, J. E. Logue, and Arthur G. Logue.
