Nervous youth recounts orders to kill in Illinois murder case
Harry Thomasson a pale nervous youth testified he murdered a man at the urging of Charles Birger as part of a southern Illinois gang war. He claimed Birger and his lieutenant Art Newman ordered the killing of Mayor Joe Adams of West City. Sessions showed Thomasson and his brother posed as from Carl Shelton to avoid suspicion. Birger’s roadhouse bombing and arson later killed his brother. Other associates Connie Ritter, Newman, and Ray Hyland were implicated in the plan.
