Five tentative jurors seated midday in the Canton murder trial of Sejanus Lengel former police chief accused of killing Don R Mellett publisher of the Canton Daily News a year ago. The state alleges Lengel conspired with underworld figures in Melletts assassination after Mellett attacked Canton vice conditions and leaders.
Mrs. Mary Aten, six, was killed and three other people were injured when a car driven by William Nickel collided with a Philadelphia New York bus near Andalus in Bristol Pennsylvania. Nickel and his wife were among the injured.
Washington July 11 prohibition administrators reported to Seymour Lowman acting assistant secretary that enforcement conditions nationwide are generally satisfactory. After meetings with field chiefs Lawman and commissioner Dr J M Doran said each administrator reported the outlook was satisfactory with only a few spots of concern.
In Rapid City on July 11 United Press reports a revived pony express riding 300 miles from Cheyenne to deliver a Wyoming invitation to President Coolidge for a frontier days celebration. Riders Bear names of Emerson Warren Roosevelt Norris Howell and Calvi n Coolidge. final miles to the summer White House. Coolidge plans to stay within day trip range.
Chaos gripped Saxony as floods devastated districts around Dresden. More than 90 dead in Berggierbuchel alone, a mother driven insane by the sight of three of her children’s bodies. Reichswehr sent troops. authorities mobilized police, fireguards, and doctors for rescue. Disease feared. water mains broken and creeks contaminated. Communists and nationalists join in relief efforts despite political rifts.
In Cleveland July 11 T J Bissett of Chicago was elected first assistant grand chief of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers at the convention.
The Irish free state vice president and minister of justice Kevin O Higgins was assassinated en route to mass in Dublin. Three gunmen fired eight shots and fled toward the mountains, wounding and killing the prominent political leader at age 35. President Cosgrave branded the act a crisis, pledging that assassins would not terrorize the country as police hunt the attackers.
Dr J Ross Wiley state Veterinarian was released on 2400 bail after eight farmers near Fork filed trespass and assault and battery charges over tuberculosis tests on cattle. He allegedly returned with warrants to conduct tests after farmers refused access. Wiley faces a hearing later this week.
Miss Edith McCalmont wins the Chrysler while Mrs Gertrude Hertzel takes the Chevrolet in a keen contest for prizes. Other winners include Mrs Franklin Hoff, Mrs Martha Ierson, and Miss Bernice Jordan among Warren residents. Jury confirms counts after a long subscription campaign in The Tribune office.
Chicago and Detroit reports state Aaron Sapiro plans negotiations to settle his $1,000,000 libel suit against Henry Ford. Sapiro may travel to Detroit. Gallagher says settlement rests on Ford's retraction and payment of incurred expenses. Ford apologized for the Dearborn Independent attacks as talks proceed.
In San Francisco on July 11 Louise Devereaux will begin the trip to Philadelphia with the ashes of her father, John Drew. In Philadelphia the ashes will be laid in the family vault of Drew and his wife. Ethel Barrimore, Drew’s niece, is arranging funeral details and a later memorial service at a church in New York City.
A borough police committee meeting is set for tonight to review police department conditions, recent state trooper raids on two clubs and several homes, and the suspension of Patrolman J. L. Utter by Burgess L. B. Chapman. The panel will draft its report for Monday’s council session on Lister's case, which was to be aired at last Tuesday's meeting but postponed due to scheduling.
Cincinnati was turned over today by members of the Elks lodge gathered for the 63rd annual grand lodge session. Elks arrived from across the United States for a week of business and merriment with the opening session and a reception planned, featuring remarks from grand exalted ruler Charins Grakelow of Philadelphia and other officers.

Indianapolis July 11 UPI A sealed document from D C Stephenson’s Klan era box lists a $2500 check to Governor Ed Jackson and a note claiming $10000 in contributions. Jackson, vacationing in Kansas, said no comment after being shown the copy. The box holds private political papers from Stephenson’s tenure as grand dragon and is the focus of the inquiry into alleged Indiana political corruption.
A western Virginia forecast calls for partly cloudy skies tonight and Tuesday with possible local thundershowers on Tuesday. High and low pressure systems create unsettled conditions between the Mississippi River and the Atlantic coast with local showers in the Ohio valley and Atlantic coast states. Temperatures remain normal or above with temperatures from Chicago to Miami and other cities noted in the observations.
