Five Die in State Fire Toll From Burns in 24 Hours
In Pennsylvania five people including a 4 year old and a 69 year old died in fires over the last day. Juniata Mays 6 of Chester perished when an oil lamp exploded while she refilled it with kerosene. Reuben Ohlinger 69 of Reading died after falling asleep in a burning chair as his wife fought the flames. A blacksmith shop blaze above Lee Jacksons apartment killed Thomas Jackson 4. In Scranton two women died from kerosene lamp fires including P N Hamlin 68 and daughter Norma 36 who survived severe burns. Mabel Figueroa 36 of color died in a bed fire and Sidney Jones a boarder is being sought as the murderer in the blaze.

Madden Purchases Corner Smoke Shop
James E. Madden of 7 St. Clair Street South Side completed negotiations to acquire the Schwing Smoke Shop at the corner of Liberty Street and Third Avenue. He assumed control this afternoon. Madden, a longtime local figure, previously ran the Madden Restaurant on Hickory Street and served as a Warren Elks Club steward. The shop was originally started by A. E. Beseblin and later owned by Albert E. Schwing until his death December 23. Improvements are planned, details undisclosed.
