Ex governor Gifford Pinchot announces he will not seek the Republican nomination for U S senator in the April primaries. He sent a letter to James A Fox of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen. Labor groups in several counties dispute petitions to place his name on the ballots.
Washington February 22. Behind open maneuvers for presidential candidates there is a hidden bid for Vice President Dawes among Republican Congressional leaders. Dawes renounces the movement toward Lowden but builds second choice strength to lead if balloting goes long at Kansas City. Indiana Kansas and Ohio favorite sons Watson Curtis and Willis would shift delegates to Dawes if not nominated. Independent farm bloc Republicans say Dawes would be acceptable. several senators privately call him the next president of the United States.
In Congress today the Senate heard Washington's farewell address and adjourned for a holiday recess. A judiciary subcommittee continued hearings on the Shipstead anti injunction bill while the House Naval subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee kept examining the Navy Department appropriation bill.
A naval court of inquiry blamed the S-4 disaster on the submarine crew and largely on Lieut. Commander KR KE Jones, while exonerating the destroyer Paulding’s actions. It faulted Rear Admiral Brumby for lacking sub construction knowledge but praised the rescue plans as logical and well executed. The decision sparked controversy and calls for further testimony or a court martial to address Brumby’s role.
The government secured its fourth victory in six oil trials as Harry Sinclair faced a six month sentence in the Supreme Court in Washington. Justice Siddons imposed the term after a contempt of court case linked to Burns detectives shadowing jurors in the Fall-Sinclair trial.
St Louis February 22. Col Charles A Lindbergh conducted a secret flight from Lambert Field at 10 22 a m aboard a cabin monoplane with four passengers. Rumors suggested an eastward hop of about 500 miles while the fuel supply covered six hours. Accompanying him were Major William B Robertson Robertson Aircraft Corp Harold M Bixby St Louis Chamber of Commerce and Harry H Knight host. B F Mahoney manufacturer of Spirit of St Louis was also aboard.
A newspaper notice advertises a 40 page booklet Presidents of the United States with portraits and life history offered for six cents to cover postage. It notes a question game with incomplete answer keys and lists names such as Abraham Lincoln Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge among the presidents.
New Kensington Pa February 22 rescue workers expect to reach seven men entombed in the Kinlock mine of the Valley Camp Coal Company at Parnassus where an explosion Monday night killed three others. Fourteen rescue squads labored through the night as water flooded chambers and dampness spread, while two nearby miners in the Boyd mine perished from gas seeping through.
Australian aviator Captain Bert Hinkler landed in Port Darwin after flying a tiny Avro solo from London to Australia in 15 days. He shattered the 1919 London to Australia record of 28 days and marked the longest single flight by one pilot, bringing his total distance to about 11 000 miles.
The Warren County Rural Letter Carriers Association held its annual meeting at the court house on Wednesday morning. A resolution was adopted and a committee was tasked to work with hotelkeepers to accommodate a potential state convention. The group endorsed a Reese good roads bill, proposing $190 million in three years for national road maintenance. Officers were reelected, with James Conklin of Pittsburgh as vice president. The next meeting is May 26 at C. E. Baker’s Pleasant Township home.
Scranton, Pa. February 22. Rinaldo Cappellini district 1 United Mine Workers president says he will not resign despite factional disputes within the union. He plans to confer with John L. Lewis in Washington amid police belief the Wilkes Barre shooting death of Frank Agatti was aimed at him.
Reverend Oscar A. Benson of Ridgway Lutheran preached to 118 Fathers and Sons at their eighth annual banquet. He outlined four essentials for a wise son: wholesomeness, industriousness, seriousness, and enthusiasm, stressing inner character over mere actions and urging youths to pursue a serious life purpose. C Harry Smith 54 president and general manager of Westinghouse Battery Co subsidiary of Union Switch and Signal Co Swissvale near Pittsburgh died after falling from a third floor window at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association on February 22 1920.

A father Konstance Kozakiewicz and four children aged 19, 16, 7, and 11 died when a large Pittsburgh residence burned in the early hours. Louis, 18, escaped severely burned after waking to the blaze and alerting neighbors. Firemen faced cold weather and a steep hillside as the cause remained undetermined, with damages at about 7000 dollars.
Washington dispatch reports plans for a senatorial inspection of the Pennsylvanian coal fields. Chairman Gooding with Senators Wagner Wheeler Pine and Metrall depart for Pittsburgh to establish headquarters. The inspection begins tomorrow morning, aims to end in a week, then the full committee will hear both sides in Washington.
In Pittston Pennsylvania on February 22 eight men, all heavily armed, were arrested during a Unitec Mine Workers Local 1703 meeting. Police reported the men faced weapons charges and were taken into custody without incident. The seizure occurred amid heightened tensions at the local union hall in Pittston.
