Preparations reach final stages as crowds gather at the Warren County Exposition and Fair grounds for the 1928 festival. Gates open daily at 7 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with professional auto races scheduled for Labor Day Monday after the fair ends.

Kansas senator and Republican vice presidential nominee Charles Curtis spoke at the New York State fair in Syracuse as a guest of the American Farm Bureau. He touted Republican farm legislation including emergency tariff acts, the intermediate farm credit measure, cooperative associations, warehouse act amendments, and other measures as farmer friendly and solving farm problems. He cited postwar Congress recognizing agricultural hardship and promised further aid.
Governor Arthur G. Sorlie, 54, of North Dakota, died at 6 45 A M in Bismarck after a period of critical illness. He had been elected governor in 1926 and again in 1928 as a Republican. Survived by his wife Grace and two children, the family was at his bedside. He had earlier held posts in banking, industry, and business across Minnesota and North Dakota. He was born April 26, 1874, in Albert Lea Minnesota.
The congregation of First Lutheran Church approved the purchase of the Clough property on Third Avenue at a special meeting. W. E. Yeager announced the decision Tuesday morning. The site, adjacent to the church, will be remodeled for Sunday school and social rooms.
The wind storm that struck Omaha Sunday killed four people, including 18 year old Kenneth Hiatt who died after a tree fell on his car. More than 30 others were injured in the disaster.
Pittsburgh August 28. County Commissioner Joseph Armstrong clashed with William B. Wilson’s attorneys at the second session of the Vare Wilson senate contest hearing. The debate focused on when Armstrong knew a challenge against Senator elect William S. Vare would be filed and whether altering ballot instructions a year after the 1926 election was improper. The Wilson camp pressed the timing of actions affecting printed ballot counts.
Warren High and grade school pupils will help name new schools to be built in the city. Superintendent Pres s announced plans allowing students to submit names for the grade buildings. The most suitable suggestions will be reviewed by F. H. West, Warren Board of Education member and chair of the Schools committee, for final picks. Suggestions for renaming existing buildings on Fourth Ward Central East Street as well as Home Street Seneca Street Jefferson and the Glade buildings are welcome.
James W. Reilley of Venturetown employed at the Warren Chair Works on Laurel Street had the little finger of his left hand severed at the third joint Tuesday morning while working on a new table. He was taken to Warren General Hospital for treatment and discharged later that afternoon. He is a member of the Newell Ponter team of the Tribune Industrial Base pallanguage.
Witnesses at a Senate hearing recounted confusion over a 1926 election dispute and asserted there was no clear contest beyond political opponents. Armstrong claimed no knowledge of a contest until representatives sought election records in March 1928. Wallerstein urged protection amid questions from Senator Waterman.
Dr. Emory C. Thompson, then in Warren for a few days, received a call from Mon day afternoon from a Buffalo patient and air mail pilot named Duffy who planned to fly in within a day to see him. The party would land at the Country Club and bring Dr C E Rose, Buffalo oral surgeon, to Warren and then return to Buffalo with Thompson before resuming the Warren visit.
London reports say civil warfare has flared anew in the Peking area as remnants of the defeated Northern army clash with Nationalists. Fierce fighting rages, with both sides sustaining casualties and movements intensifying amid unsettled control of northern districts.
Paris reports France has invited Soviet diplomat M L Litvinoff to adhere to the Paris signed antiwar pact with the same rights as original signatories. Litvinoff requested full treaty texts and diplomatic correspondence, while Russia indicated willingness to join. Kellogg pact gains backing as other nations signal adherence after its signing.
Lammot DuPont, president of the DuPont company, states he will support Herbert Hoover in the coming presidential race.
