One hundred fifty six graduates at Warren High School, most of them bound for higher education, with nineteen girls among thirty already enrolled. Boston dispatch reports that Chief Justice Taft and Justice Stone refused to intervene in the Sacco and Vanzetti case after defense counsel sought a stay. Stone and Taft joins Holmes and Brandeis in denying appeals. Governor Fuller considered further clemency while the electric chair prepared for execution at Charlestown State Prison.
Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh left Madison at 11 30 a m in the Spirit of St Louis bound for Milwaukee. The famous aviator aimed to complete a long distance hop during the day as part of an ongoing cross country trip.
Eleven per gona crashed to earth in a Dutch Air Service Monoplane at Seven Dake Eng today but no one was killed. The plane left Croydon for Amsterdam with nine passengers and a crew of two. All aboard were Europeans and all were injured but could walk.
President Coolidge and party aboard a presidential special en route to Yellowstone faced precautions for Sacco Vanzetti protests. Eight thousand greeted the train at Billings as Mrs Coolidge and the president remained aboard. The journey included stops, with Mrs Coolidge blocked from greeting crowds by a Montana delegation.
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized Johnsonburg to abandon 18 miles of its line in Elk and McKean counties Pennsylvania. The action allows the railroad to cease operations on the specified route subject to regulatory conditions and possible future filings.
Treva Bonamino, 20, was killed when a coupe stalled on Erie tracks near Perry highway between Saegertown and Venango. Her sister Trene Hamlett and Agnes Kramsky, both of Erie, were injured as the freight train struck the vehicle. Thomas Roward, who was behind in another car, warned the group but the collision occurred. Bonamino’s body was sent to Meadville morgue as Coroner W. E. Byham investigates the crash.
Pittsburgh Aug 22 a riot erupted when state troopers dispersed a miners meeting at 12 Guide Grove along Freeport road. Private John J Downey 27 of Greensburg was killed and several were injured, with one seriously. About 40 troopers from Greensburg and Butler arrested 15 Sacco Vanzetti sympathizers earlier.
Harrisburg observers report only one day with a normal temperature so far in August. On August 13 the mercury hit the expected level, while all other days showed a temperature deficiency and the total shortfall for the month stands at 100 degrees.
The long rumored property settlement between Lita Gray Chaplin and Charlie Chaplin was announced by her attorney Edwin T. McMurrey. The accord ends Mrs Gray Chaplin's divorce suit and Chaplin's response, with Mrs Gray Chaplin dedicating time to her children and possibly pursuing acting or writing. Chaplin plans to resume production of The Circus, returning to public life after the scandal.
Navy authorized to continue the search for seven missing aviators until Thursday under Admiral E W Eberle amid the Hawaii pall of mourning. The aviation disaster shadowed the islands as James Dole faced near collapse and families waited for word on Mil dred Doran and others, while a Samoan vessel scouted the waters near Kauze for the fated PN 9 No 1.
Six defendants pleaded guilty before President Judge D A Aard in a special term of Court of Common Pleas. John Sorvelli of Clarendon was fined 300 dollars and four months in Allegheny County workhouse for possession and sale of intoxicating liquors. Dore'e Moore and Henry Proper of Eldred township were fined 100 dollars and 200 days in jail for larceny relating to auto accessories theft from service stations, with time already served deducted. Charles Henry, unknown address, drew 100 dollars fine and 1060 days in the workhouse for carrying concealed weapons. Henry was found with a revolver near the incident at the Stumble Inn. Jamey M and Strickland Porter of Sheffield were sentenced to 100 days in jail and 100 dollar fines for larceny of auto accessories, contingent on return or payment for stolen goods. Angela Bruno of Warren received a lecture and costs after false statements concerning an operator's license. George B. Munn reported settlement payments in five Pennsylvanian Railroad insult suits, with one awaiting administrator appointment for its estate.
