Judge Elbert H. Gary of United States Steel Corp died in New York at 8 40 am. He would have turned 81 in October. His death follows chronic myocarditis after a long illness. James A. Farrell, president of U S Steel, may succeed him, with Wall Street already weighing the possibility. Gary, born in Wheaton Illinois, rose from farm boy to prominent financier and jurist. The body to be buried in Wheaton with services and state viewing planned.
Pittsburgh August 15 Senator David A Reed of Pittsburgh is named among those who could succeed Judge Be H Gary as head of the U S Steel Corporation. Rumors of Reed as a probable new chairman have circulated but recently faded. Reed is currently in Europe.
Nicola Sacco, after nearly a month without nourishment, drank two cups of beef tea and agreed to begin eating as his hunger strike ends. Doctor McLaughlin announced the development amid ongoing appeals and legal maneuvers in the Sacco and Vanzetti case as the state faces possible last-ditch efforts to stave off execution.
The Pittsburgh and West Virginia railway applied to the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to acquire control of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway by purchasing capital stock. Atlantic-area sightings followed, with police in Fleetwood and Wakefield reporting aircraft overhead.

United Press reports six people were found dead in the ruined tenement after a massive explosion and fire in Montreal. The deceased include Emma McDonald and James McDonald with other victims named. four seriously injured were hospitalized. Fire Captain Leduc called the blast a total gas explosion, exact cause not released.
Goong W. Roth of Bionaca, Pa, piloted the plane that dived into the Ohio River above Ambridge. Kenneth B. Hercules of Martins Ferry, Ohio, was the passenger. The crash destroyed the wings and wreckage caused loss of control as the aircraft plunged about 400 feet into the water witnessed by hundreds.
Secretary of Labor James J. Davis arrived in Philadelphia by air from Huron South Carolina after visiting the summer White House and meeting with President Coolidge. He traveled by train from Chicago to Philadelphia to attend initiation ceremonies at the local Moose home yesterday.
Philadelphia police say Frank Rakanin, 43, died from a fractured skull after being found on the street yesterday. Detectives believe he was struck from behind by an unknown assailant.
