Rapid City reports from eight Republican leaders predict a Coolidge renomination despite his statement he did not seek a term in 1928. They expect a draft or spontaneous movement at the national convention to unite against Lowden Hoover opposition. The western bloc is cited as strongly backing him, while Minnesota Republicans split between Lowden and Hoover.
Unfavorable weather postpones the start of the trans Atlantic air race. Charles A Levine delays and reschedules while Dieudonne Costes also abstains. Otto Koennecke lines up for Cologne to New York with engine delays blamed on sabotage. Nine Dole prize pilots postpone Hawaii flight to next Tuesday after an instrument and readiness delay. one plane crash killed two pilots. Miss Mildred Doran will be the sole woman entrant with Pedlar.
United Press reports on August 12 in Greensburg Pennsylvania that Acting District Attorney Keister ordered county detectives to raid firemen at the state convention. One man, identified as A Hasans of Uniontown, was arrested with moonshine while alcohol samples were collected. The raid briefly threatened to cancel the day’s parade but it proceeded as planned amid protests by visiting firemen.
Detroit dispatch reports Col Charles A Lindbergh left Ford airport for Grand Rapids after bidding Henry Ford farewell. Lindbergh invited Ford to consider his house a second home whenever nearby, as Lindbergh flew with his mother Evangeline.
Two people were killed and 28 passengers narrowly escaped injury when a Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul mail train derailed at Stordevant six miles from Racine after striking an open switch. The engineer L H Brock and fireman T M Weber, both of Milwaukee, died. Seven cars left the track and two coaches overturned.
John D. Sullivan, 37, of Naglewood, Pa, a Pittsburgh police officer, died in a Dunkirk hospital from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Westfield on August 2. He and two other officers were grounded from the road.
In Boston on August 12, defense counsel prepared for a Tuesday hearing before the full supreme court to seek relief for Nicola Sacco and Bartolo Vanzetti. The case follows Gov Fuller's respite and Judge Sanderson's ruling allowing an appeal, with four appeals to be heard at the special session. Vanzetti ends his hunger strike with coffee while Sacco continues fasting. prison physician notes Sacco shows no greater danger.
London reports reveal J Ogden Armour's condition worsened with unfavorable developments. He has been ill for some time and underwent x rays to check for an abscessed lung, though results were not disclosed.
In Uniontown Pa on August 12 a car carrying three men rolled down an embankment into the Youghiogheny River near Dawson. Herbert Barrett, 28, of Dawson, was crushed under the vehicle and is in serious condition. Uriah Rimmell and Marvin Mendes suffered non serious injuries.
Phila. Aug. 12. Stanley Zutec, injured after two falls, was taken from a hospital by police who returned him home with a still in operation found in the kitchen. Zutec was escorted back to the police station and placed in a cell while convalescing from a sprained ankle.
Washington Aug 12 Colonel James C Waddell, recent federal supervisor of alcohol and breweries, urged 275 per cent beer as a solution to enforcement problems. He said the prohibition bureau makes progress except for wort and that the Volstead act's 45 per cent limit fuels unpopularity of the law.
London August 12 A tale of a woman with many lovers ends at Pentonville Prison as John Robinson is hanged for the murder of Minnie Bonati whose body was found dis membered and packed in a trunk. The case presented a Sherlock Holmes style puzzle for Scotland Yard solved without amateur sleuths.
American citizen Robert Edward Pirie was abducted from his La Michelin ranch near Vincente Guerrero by bandits. Authorities were advised not to deploy troops for rescue to avoid increasing Pirie’s danger. Consul D H Mall said he would travel to Vincente Guerrero to investigate.
Dublin August 1. Eamon De Valera and his Republican Senate members entered the Dail marking the first seating since the Irish Free State birth. Deputy Johnson, Labour leader, announced a plan to move a vote of no confidence and seek debate Tuesday. Public galleries crowded as Republicans sat in benches formerly used by Labour.
John H English of Pittsburgh died at midnight at 408 Fifth Avenue residence. Funeral services set for Saturday at 4 PM from Oakland mortuary chapel with Rev. Harold F Stoddard officiating. Interment in Oakland. English was a former prohibition director for the district, an Allegheny County deputy attorney general, and counsel for the Anti Saloon League of Pittsburgh. The Allegheny county common pleas court adjourned at noon in his honor.
In New York on August 12 police and coast guards captured the steamship Ansonia with a cargo of liquor valued at about 1 million dollars and 66 men aboard. Boatswain G. A. Loomis boarded the vessel alone after a pursuit from a coast guard boat, and the captain and crew were taken. Thirty-nine men arrested. the crew cut moorings and fled. Some evidence suggested the night included ramming a barge but no liquor landed.
Washington Aug 12 Police surveillance followed the discovery of a bomb suspect near the Davis residence last night. The man, a foreigner, was found in a basement near the secretary’s home and claimed to seek the “Davis servant quarters.” He evaded pursuit after breaking away.
Dr Jesse T Little, of Pittsburgh, died in Baltimore at Camden Station shortly after arrival by train. He was being wheeled toward Dr James G Saffel s auto when he collapsed. University Hospital staff reported heart trouble as the cause.
