Income tax evasion case looms as Supreme Court reviews Klein saga
The Supreme Court weighs a massive tax evasion case led by Hyman Harvey Klein, a New York and Baltimore liquor dealer connected to Harwood's wartime whisky profits. The government says Klein and associates evaded over 17 million dollars via overseas firms in Cuba and Panama, with profits funneled to tax havens and later drawn back for capital gains.

IRS classifies returns to audit in two year cycle plan
The Revenue Service uses classifiers to screen tax forms and audit a small fraction of filings. In 1956, 1 951 000 individual returns and 166 000 corporate returns were audited out of 58 640 000 and 869 000 filed respectively. Commissioner Harrington cites lack of manpower to implement the proposed two year cycle for large or high income returns.
