IBM Chief Urges Higher Industry Taxes to Counter Russia
Thomas J. Watson Jr. told the National Association of Manufacturers that higher taxes on industry are needed to compete with the Soviet Union. He urged a balanced budget and lower taxes only if combined with broader measures, and warned isolationist policy harms the United States while Russia expands its global influence. He called for lower tariffs and more foreign investment to aid underdeveloped nations, arguing this two-way program could counter Soviet gains and prevent apathy at home.
