Rodgers and Hammerstein Anniversary Show Under Delicate Fireworks
A television special marking Rodgers and Hammerstein's work for General Foods' twenty fifth anniversary delivered superb musical moments from South Pacific Carousel The King and I and Oklahoma but was spoiled by pop acts Jack Benny Edgar Bergen Groucho Marx and ill fitting You Bet Your Life parody. The program showed promise when scenes like Carousel with John Raitt Jan Clayton and It Might As Well Be Spring with Mary Martin shone, yet interruptions and jarring Swan's Down ads broke the mood despite stellar singing by Rosemary Clooney Jan Clayton Gordon MacRae Florence Henderson and others. The piece ends noting the enduring magic of the songs amid a waste of talent and misplaced humor.
