An elderly former merchant asks for any respectable job not too laborious. The piece contrasts his humble decline with memories of wealth, luxury, and a once-prosperous life, noting his ruined son and quiet family suffering while editors overlook the tragedy.
An Indian wolf nurse tale describes a trooper rescuing a nine or ten year old boy raised by a she wolf near Chandour and Sultanpoor. The boy behaves as a wild animal, shuns humans, eats raw meat, and dies after a period in captivity. The passage widens to ghostly anecdotes and a stream of humorous verse and letters about romance and money.
The London Assyrian Excavation Society reports a newly found palace at Nineveh Knouyanjik. Colonel Rawlinson notes the structure is vast with 600 slabs, superb sculpture, and rich detail surpassing earlier Assyrian palaces.
The Squire recalls almost losing his senate race due to Waterem’s liquor shortage. Sam delivered five gallons to Swampers to secure votes, but the Swampers vow they will not vote for anyone who cannot afford ten gallons of whiskey. The only nearby storekeeper, a Whig, wouldn’t sell liquor near the election.
A group led by Ross seeks an apology from the disaffected but fears whiskey. Cale suggests expedients to water liquor. attempts with gin and rum fail. Red pepper proves effective, nearly blistering throats. A fresh supply of Old Monongahela changes minds and swings voters to a Senate majority.
A Chippewa group ambushed near Cedar Island Lake by Sioux as they sought scalp forays. Way Cloud, wounded, refused escape, sang his death song while scalped and killed, displaying untold defiance. A later note recounts Mrs. Benton’s Washington death and a Memphis Arkansas dance tale and a quip about a fly landing as a daguerreographer watches.
