In 1771 South Carolina, Kate Heath overhears Lord Rawdon and Colonel planning a dawn strike on Gen. Green. She flees eight miles through British lines, passes four mile pickets with the countersign, guides to Green’s tent, and helps rally the army, earning his thanks and saving the patriot cause. Kate later returns home as Rawdon retreats.
A Williamsport Gazette and Bulletin correspondent visits Warren, describing its Allegheny river valley setting, Tanner’s Hill, thriving farms, and wealth from oil, lumber, and contracts. It notes the town hall, churches, banks, and a grand suspension bridge, plus Brown and Struthers Iron Works and plans for rail expansion toward Titusville.
The piece laments a long widow’s bereavement with a grave, lyrical memory. It speaks of a loved one resting four years in the grave, the speaker’s lasting longing, and the hope that life’s sorrows will eventually sleep. The Christian Union is noted.
