A fragile orphan Milicent Wild grows up in a restrictive household and, after her aunts death, moves to a cottage with the Duncan family where she falls in love with Gregory Duncan. Their engagement faces social tension and a wary entrance of Annie Hentz as a potential rival.
In a quiet parlor scene Harry muses that Mr and Mrs Marshall may not love each other as deeply as his parents. Uncle Duncan teases him while the three observers note the moment, and Harry recalls Mark’s coat and Mrs Marshall waiting by the carriage at the gate.
A week passes as the narrator recounts joy and romance. In a library scene Gregory and Mrs. Duncan discuss newly arrived medallions from New York when Willard rushes in to announce Aunt Annie’s arrival, prompting a warm reunion with Aunt Hentz.
An old man toils through day under a linden tree when a vision named Tam Solomon appears. The phantom says the man learned industry from the ant in youth but must learn to rest in winter to enjoy his harvest. The allegory, attributed to German origin, imparts a twofold lesson.
A man plagued by erysipelas for years and nearly deaf after nine months of illness found no relief from local doctors. A friend gave him Holloway's Ointment and Pills and within two weeks he could rise, see, and hear. After a month he was completely cured and returned to work.
A backwoodsman quips with a stranger in a hotel over shared lodging. He notes his bed is narrow for his dreaming of shooting and scalping Indians and recalls being charged extra for whittling a headboard. He offers the wall stranger a peaceful sleep if he wishes to stay.
Mrs Purdy of Spencer Tioga County is 105 years old and in good health with sharp mind and memory. Widowed at 22 after her husband died in the Revolution she never remarried and still recalls scenes and anecdotes from that era. Her great grand daughter is Dr Purdy of Elmira.
The Chinese Repository recounts a brutal death by slow burning after being soaked in tallow and anchored to a grave. At Cleveland Agricultural Fair a tank showcased artificially raised spotted brook trout from six months to two years old.
