A nine or ten year old girl tends a damaged rag doll in the sun on Brush Street. A fourteen year old mocks her, then returns the doll and promises aid if she keeps quiet. The doll's condition recalls the mother who made it before she died, prompting a rare act of repentance from the boy.
A wealthy St. Louis man refuses temperance pleas claiming it is not his business. Later his wife and one daughter die, another daughter is severely injured after a crash caused by a railway worker’s whisky. He learns the toll and declares it is his business now.
An anecdote from New York describes a wealthy man’s death after tobacco use. A professor observed blood under a microscope and warned that unless he stopped smoking, the man had months to live. The tale echoes tobacco’s alleged harm and a rapid European death.
Yanni a Greek farmer near Aba south of Tripoli vowed to dedicate a barren olive tree to missionaries. He advised digging and manuring, then added a soil mix and a pledge to the tree. The next spring the tree blossomed and bore fruit, and since then Tripoli missionaries have enjoyed its harvest.
