Snakes on the Orinoco Alarm Passengers
In the Orinoco stretch we saw water snakes crossing between islets and even near boats. The green six to eight foot serpents swim with much of their body out of water and prey on water rats and young birds. Boatmen avoid sailing beneath overhanging trees to prevent snakes detaching from branches.
