President Wilson spoke at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day urging renewed national resolve. He said the United States must act now to show it was born to serve mankind, noting liberty calls and a world struggle beyond American borders.
The Marine division to accompany Gen Pershing to Europe will field about 2600 men under Col Charles A Doyen, Commandant of the Marine Barracks in Washington. The regiment, trained in regular army service, will operate as infantry likely in Belgian trenches. Doyen will command actively and is regarded as an exceptionally capable marine officer.
Naval aid to Secretary of the Navy Daniels Lieut Byron McCandless a popular young officer resigns clerical duties to seek active service abroad amid fears of war with German U boats His request to go to sea has been granted.
Horace McDaniel, a Wilmington special policeman, sought witnesses in Elizabeth Wilsons liquor without license case. It is alleged Wilson spread a voodoo powder on steps to deter witnesses and claimed it would kill them if they came out. McDaniel then obtained powder to confront the threat and proceeded to the city court.
Washington May 31 joint resolution passed by the senate and approved by the War Department permits retired army engineers to be reinstated to active duty to release younger officers for service in France.

A Goodyear built military dirigible balloon vanished on its return trip from Chicago. Pilot Ralph H. Upson and observer H T Kraft were aboard. The craft was sighted near Medina, Ohio, last evening heading southeast as search efforts continued through the region.
Frederick W. Zimmer, 27, died after a hydroplane plunged 200 feet into Porter avenue near the Erie canal bridge during a Yale aviation volunteers drill. Seymour H. Knox, 18, was seriously injured with skull and facial fractures. Knox underwent head surgery. prognosis favorable.
Resolutions passed at the First America Conference for Democracy and Terms of Peace at Madison Square Garden urge an early general democratic peace and demand the United States announce war aims in definite terms. Morris Hulquist, resolutions chairman, presented the measures.
London reports women’s boots will be lower this summer though prices are not involved. The government plans to economize leather by banning boots taller than seven inches. Manufacturers may seek non leather materials for tall boots, but fabrics suitable for that use are scarce.
Paris reports gradual recovery in the ravaged district as military and civil efforts restore roads and usable resources. Two government bank acts were introduced by the finance minister and read first time in Parliament yesterday. One amendment would let penny banks invest in government securities and another would allow banks to lend to farmers on livestock. The division 65 to 28 upheld the government majority. Frank Oliver’s Liberal tariff revision amendment was defeated.
