Sutro’s plan for a free public library to rival great institutions

Adolph Sutro has worked for years on a California legacy to rival Lick and Stanford, a free public library to be housed in a handsome building donated to the city. He aims for a German university town model focused on scholars, with about 60,000 volumes. The collection spans old manuscripts, incunabula, and post fifteenth century works, rich in English history and literature. Potential sites include Sutro Heights or Golden Gate Park, pending city approval.

I Remember General Grant and the Guard Duty

William Ransom recalls a Richmond siege day when he served as sergeant of the guard with the Seventh Connecticut Volunteers. A prankish encounter with a cavalry rider led to a court martial ordered by General Grant. Hawley helped prevent the firing squad, leaving him disgraced and carrying a sand-filled knapsack for three days before Grant advised him to always do your duty.

English climber fails on Dunnagiri summit with Swiss guides

Englishman Mr. Graham and two Swiss mountain guides attempted Dunnagiri in the Himalayas starting from Nynee Tal. After reaching 22,500 feet, a snowstorm forced retreat just short of the peak. Graham notes Himalayan peaks are steeper than the Alps and breathing at his high point was not harder than 10,000 feet lower.

Mr Colfax the Omnivorous Story Reader

Mr Colfax read novels and stories from many sources and valued short, sketchy stories in journalism. He clipped worthy pieces from newspapers and magazines, crediting original sources and bringing them home for publication.

New Farming Claims and Far-Reaching Plant Growth

A collector cites dramatic crop increases from a new system underdraining claims. He invites farmers to visit Wellsville New York on July 4 for demonstrations, promising large yields and two bushels of fruit. Also notes a Soudan war death and a physician warning about buried lives and resuscitation chances.
