Logan Re-elected Senator from Illinois Keeps Republican Senate

Last Wednesday the gratifying news came that Senator Logan was re elected to succeed himself as United States Senator from Illinois. The contest has been long and close, but the Republicans win by fidelity and good management. Logan not only did valiant service in the war, but he is a tower of strength in the Senate. He worked hard last year for the general ticket, and ought to have been Vice President. This failing, his many friends throughout the Union will rejoice that we are still to have his services in the Senate. Logan's election insures the continued Republican majority in the Senate. The election of a Democrat from Illinois would have made it a little doubtful, and hence the desperate efforts of the Democracy to win. Now there are but two places to fill in the 49th Congress. One is in New Hampshire, and the Legislature of that State will in a few weeks choose some Republican to succeed Blair, and it is safe to count upon the coming of a Republican Senator next December from Oregon, where our party has a majority in the Legislature, but could not agree upon a candidate last winter. This will make the body stand forty Republicans, thirty four Democrats, and two Readjusters.
