In the continuing tale, Miss Hamilton loses wealth and security, finds solace in Mr. Raymond, and confides her poverty and fears to him during secret walks. The Farnhams’ scrutiny and envy complicate her growing bond with the gentleman as she questions propriety and fate.
In a tense scene Miss Hamilton faces Mrs Farnham and Miss Farnham as Mr Raymond declares love and asks for marriage. Despite poverty and scorn, Miss Hamilton accepts a rapid wedding plan and leaves with Raymond to begin a new life with him and his mother awaiting at home.

A Green Mountain farmer defends Mr. Edmunds as warm and engaged saying he once visited the district for the Legislature election and kissed all the babies in the country for miles around. The remark challenges the claim that Edmunds is cold hearted.
Warren ladies advised to carry an opera bag for evening wear. The item is square satin or brocade with trim and perfume, opened after performances to hold programme glass fan and handkerchief. Alderman Blair of Scranton noted Nov 9, 1863 that he used Dr Thomas Electric Oil for sprains burns cuts and rheumatism and was cured each time.
