Zina Fay Pierce Leads Vermont Temperance Movement
Zina Fay Pierce of St. Albans Vermont has organized a temperance society and written a creed. Her teaching argues against strict total abstinence noting milder liquor forms should not be treated as the same as hard liquor, and that beer drinking in moderation may be allowed for young women. She advocates women drinking malt liquor over tea and attacks the abstinence pledge as a stigma on communion and questioning Christ’s wisdom. Pierce is described as young eloquent and pretty with many followers.
