Fire destroys Portage Genesee river bridge after grand wooden era
The Portage Erie railroad bridge spanning the Genesee river on the Erie line near Buffalo burned and was completely destroyed. Built in 1851 by Laurman Rockafellow & Moore, the 234 foot high 800 foot long timber structure rested on thirteen piers and cost about 180000 dollars. Immediate steps planned to erect a new bridge as two watchmen kept sparks in check. Also notes on General Blair undergoing blood transfusions for paralysis and unexpected winter conditions in Duluth.
