Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus to Showcase Largest Hippo May 20
The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus arrives May 20 with a major exhibit of the largest hippopotamus brought to America. The beast was captured in British South Africa and fought fiercely in a pitfall before captivity. The crowd will also see two jungle-born lion cubs, a cosmopolitan traveling post office, and a vast parade of performers from around the world. The show employs 1,100, 658 horses, and 400 animals, travels on 87 double-length cars, and operates 22 tents over 14 acres with a dynamo-powered light system.

It notes Mexico’s finances are depleted, railways broken, and bond issues exhausted, while the U.S. holds a sizable cash balance and options to raise funds for a large army.
