A reverent tribute contrasts Moses leading the Jews with Lincoln’s death. The speaker honors Lincoln as a martyr of liberty, laments slavery as the true enemy, and calls the nation to renewed resolve, unity, and vigilance in defense of republican government and freedom.
At a Christian Commission gathering on Monday, attendees contributed from their pocketbooks. The hat passed among the crowd and raised 370 dollars as pieces of silver and gold sold to various bidders including George H. Stuart and Alexander Whildin, with further gifts totaling 50 dollars from a wounded soldier and others. The event closed with Garret & Martin’s 200 dollar check added to the total.
In the summer of 1858 at Faneuil Hall Jeff Davis is invoked as a traitor figure in a denunciation of treason against the Constitution and the Union. The speaker laments oath breakers among public officers and condemns use of office to injure states, calling it treason to honor and property rights. A quip about a barrister and a kiss ends the reminiscence.
