Escaped Patient From North Warren Insane Hospital
Vincent Castrello escaped from the State Hospital for the Insane at North Warren between 12:15 and 1 a.m. He was in cell No 9 and the door and bars were allegedly secure. Philadelphia March 24 The executive committee of the striking car men voted to continue the strike against the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company despite a settlement offer mediated by United States Senator Boies Penrose. The plan included reinstatement of many strikers with $2 daily to surplus workers, wage hikes to 23 cents an hour by June 1 and incremental raises to 25 cents, recognition of grievance committees, and an arbitration board for the 173 discharged workers. The allied building trades joined in, pledging to extend sympathy strikes until grievances are settled. A near-unanimous vote backed this stance as talks toward ending the strike ended, following a car dynamiting incident that night. Police later raided the strike HQs. six wagonloads of motormen and conductors were jailed.
