Mrs A L Darling aged about 54 died at the residence of Mr M Waters in Warren on Saturday morning March 21 1885 after years of organic heart disease. She was sister of Mrs Waters and niece of Mrs Jane Orr and was a Baptist church member. Funeral services were held Monday with Reverends Hammond and Allen officiating. burial in Oakland Cemetery was deferred as Mr Darling and Mr Waters could not arrive.
A meeting of the Erie Presbytery will be held in Warren on April 4 in the Presbyterian Church with a sermon and announcements for future business. The Ladies Missionary Society also meets that week in Warren, likely bringing about 150 visitors who should be entertained with Warren's hospitality to ensure pleasant, successful meetings.
In Indiana County Pa Judge White after hearing arguments on March 18 delivered a lengthy opinion March 18 refusing to grant a license. He deemed license optional and unnecessary prompting temperance support. The Pittsburg Gazette notes four local option counties Potter Green Washington Indiana plus many boroughs and townships in Allegheny Westmoreland Warren and other counties. May their number increase.
The will of the late Thomas Hoge was admitted to probate on Tuesday evening. He leaves all property to his two daughters Mrs. W. A. Cooper and Mrs. A. M. Hoover for life, then reverts to the Franklin Cemetery Company. A clause provides the $55,000 stolen from him by Venango National Bank officials should they return it to his executors.
The Warren area anticipates a busy season with oil activity in Clarendon field and nearby tracts. Fertig and Heine plan 25 wells before July. other firms survey Wardwell pool and Glade Run zones while turf construction rises, including A. B. McKain and a four story Hoffman block.

A letter from Girard Pennsylvania students asking for a verse from Quaker poet John G Whittier yielded a handwritten composition dated March 5 1885 from Danvers Massachusetts. The poem urges students to persevere in truth and duty and to seek the highest good.
A. A. Davis & Co. advertises cheap Baby Carriages. Gro. P. Orr & Co. offers Mackerel at 1 cent each or 10 cents a dozen. O. F. Hoffman, Warren, Pa. seeks inquiries for a Pine Timber tract in Columbus Township. Also promotes Dollar Flour and a medium priced Carriage from Gero. P. Orr & Co.
Bei Bros pledges a large selection of carpets in ingrain, tapestry Brussels, body Brussels, and velvets to War ren residents. They claim to match any national price and offer a 5 percent extra discount on quotes from abroad or agents from nearby towns.

The appropriation bill provides that newspapers sent by the publisher from the office of publication or to actual subscribers or news agents may use mail at one cent per pound or fraction after July 1, 1885. Articles in newspapers may be marked for observation without postage increase.

A movement to start a medical college in Pittsburg is noted, while Pittsburgh area natural gas firms report 219 miles of pipe, 3.5 million dollars invested, and gas output comparable to 2.1 million bushels of coal monthly.

The Lewiston Journal reports Turner's Cleveland inauguration ball at Grange Hall. Fiddles played from eight, as couples surged into a grand march with many unable to move from the hall center. Dances included Money Music Durant's Hornpipe Sailor's Hornpipe Hull's Victory. These old Warren dancers would likely have enjoyed the event.
Judge Biddle rules there is no fixed lane rule on public highways. Travelers may drive where safe, but must turn to the right when meeting oncoming traffic unless overtaken by heavy loads or footmen. The plaintiff’s failure to keep right was deemed not negligence, so the motion for a new trial was denied.
The Philadelphia Times reports J. B. Apple of Philadelphia has invented a petroleum fuel furnace usable in stationary boilers ships locomotives and mining engines. It produces no soot ashes sparks or cinders and can be reignited after oil flow is stopped. It costs less fuel than coal or wood and requires less space. a train can be run with one gallon per mile.
Pittsburg stockman warns of a sharp fall in the 1885 wool clip as sheepmen curb flocks nationwide. Texas faces discouraging conditions and prices fall. sheep sold as low as 25 cents per head. Australian deaths from drought push supply down and prices up next year.
