Erdman arbitrators hear firemen from 54 Eastern roads dispute over wage increases totaling about 12 million dollars. Witnesses describe heavy coal loads and heat strains on the job, with Turck claiming 48,000 pounds per 101 mile run and hours-long duties aboard engines.
A bill to furnish free text books and school supplies to all pupils in New York public schools was introduced in the legislature today. It follows a recommendation to Governor Sulzer from a committee of inquiry.
A gasoline substitute named gasene costing 3 to 4 cents per gallon has been found. Henry B. Taylor of a Warren Pennsylvania refining company is credited with the discovery. The fluid is said to be 25 to 30 percent more efficient than gasoline.
Ernest King was found hanged from a barn rafter on his father Frank King’s farm between Addison and Knoxville on Sunday night. The death occurred amid despair. his brother discovered the body. Frank King had died previously.
Albany March 13 The senate finance committee heard sworn testimony accusing Milton BE Gibbs Governor Sulzer’s nomination as the state hospital commission’s legal member of collecting 1700 dollars in negligence actions for three Italians and taking 1100 for his own services. He allegedly kept 200 for each client and later settled on a one third share. The affidavits claim Gibbs had an agreement in 1904 to retain a third of recovered amounts. After testimony, committee leaders signaled Gibbs’ nomination likely to be rejected by the senate.
Miss Mary Shovelin, a Hazleton region organizer, spent part of the day in the Mahanoy City lockup after a clash between girl strikers and workers at the Janowitz shirt factory. She was released after a short detention as thirty girls walked out in sympathy and she was accused of striking Burgess Dobhney with an umbrella when urged to disperse.
Robert Strauch, a civil engineer at Panama, arrived in Cressona after a frantic dash to reach his mother before she died. Mrs. Strauch had already passed away days earlier, and he saw her body as services were underway at the Reformed church, unaware of the death until his arrival.
Mrs Annie Gales faced Alderman Carter in Chester on March 13 charged with burning chickens alive and breaking the backs of others with a club. A fine of ten dollars and costs was imposed and she was locked up in default. Samuel B Logan of the SPCA prosecuted the case.
A 40 cow herd owned by S. B. Chambers near Unionville, Coatesville area, is quarantined after five cows developed hydrophobia in 10 days and were killed. Another cow fell ill yesterday, believed caused by a mad dog entering the herd.
About 60 Pennsylvania railroad track workers in Lancaster and nearby areas refused to work. They earn 1.66 dollars for a 10 hour day and are striking for a nine hour day and 20 cents more per hour.
Reading Pennsylvania March 13. Dr Abra K Warner of Reading who just secured a divorce in Reno returned home and obtained a marriage license in Philadelphia to wed Mrs Nora L Baum of Pottstown. The wedding date is not announced.
Mrs. Mary W. Harriman widow of E H Harriman deeded in trust a residence at Sodus Point on Great Sodus bay to the Western New York diocese of the Protestant Episcopal church. The property adjoins Harriman park.
Frank A. Wood register and recorder of Warren County died after a stroke at the I O O F Hall two hours after addressing lodge members. He passed away at Emergency Hospital about 1 am Wednesday. Survived by wife, daughter Annie, son Ralph, two sisters, and a brother. Born July 11, 1856 in Honesdale Pennsylvania, he moved to Warren as a youth and later led Grand Valley oil and lumber business. He served as Grand Valley postmaster eleven years and became Register and Recorder on January 1, 1912. He was active in Presbyterian and Odd Fellows communities and resided on Hertzel Street with his family.
Miss Sophia Horvath aged 19 was shot through the heart by Joseph Sabo in Kulpmont after declining his brother Harry’s marriage proposal. Sabo fled to the mountains. Sheriff Glass hunted him until daybreak. Harry Sabo was arrested on suspicion. The tragedy followed Horvath’s planned New York wedding after Easter. sister Mrs. Mosewa lives in Kulpmont.
Three yeggmen were captured and one wounded in a running chase after wrecking the Shiloh New Jersey post office. A pursuing auto, led by State Detective Lore, exchanged shots at Alloway before the bandits surrendered. Authorities found no loot in the car. victims suspected the take was hidden in the woods. Prisoners identified as Harry Miller Lindenville New York Joseph Coakley Philadelphia and Jerry Allen Camden New Jersey.

At Roulett te Pa eight miles from Port Allegany the 2 1/2 year old daughter of Mrs Leonard Heath burned to death in a kitchen accident when left momentarily alone. Mrs Heath later committed suicide by arsenic amid grief. She was formerly Miss Cora Burdick of Port Allegany.
Prices received by U S producers for staple crops averaged about 21.7 percent lower on March 1 compared with a year ago. The March 1 level fell 3.9 percent from 1911 and 19.0 percent from 1909, while the February 7 to March 1 period showed a 0.6 percent rise versus a 1.9 percent February gain in the prior five years.
