Ex patent official H L Ellsworth plans to plant fifty bushels of peach stones in a central prairie, paying fifty cents per bushel, to grow peaches and fuel there. After several years the trees would be cut for fuel and a new growth would start, with fruit dried by women on shares.
In court the prisoner Douglass speaks with calm dignity confessing his descent into drink and its effect on his life. He links the crime to state licensed liquor shops, describing personal torment, family loss, and a plea for ending official facilitation of drinking to prevent further crimes.
