Dug-Out Duke: Seneca Canoes and Allegheny River Trade

The Bradford Era recounts how the Seneca people revered the Allegheny and used dug-out canoes carved from pine and cucumber trunks to travel the river. Pioneers soon adopted the dug-out for transport between Warren and Pittsburgh, with keel-boats and later wagon routes replacing water travel. Temperance Work District Convention in Corry

The First District Convention of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union met at the Corry Presbyterian Church on Tuesday June 14 with Mrs J B Chace presiding. Officers elected include Mrs Richard of Franklin treasurer and Miss L G Sanford Erie secretary. Committees appointed on resolutions and credentials. delegates from Corry Columbus Erie Franklin Girard Northeast Oil City Union City Warren. Afternoon session featured reports, juvenile work papers, and a plan to form county presidents. Resolutions urged active temperance work, juvenile schools, widespread literature, and electing temperance candidates. Secretary and treasurer elected L G Sanford and Mrs Cobham. ten percent of auxiliary dues to be paid in fall. proceedings to be published.
