Chinese Lacquering Techniques Described by Consul General
Writing from Hongkong Consul General G B Anderson explains lacquering basics in China and Japan. The urushi resin obtained from Rhus vernicifera is carved in July and August to extract sap, then sun-dried into top clear resin and bottom darker material. After surface smoothing and filling joints, layers of lacquer are built up by multiple coats, typically three to eighteen, with polishing between applications. Decoration includes mother of pearl inlay embedded during early coats before final polishing.
