A Chicago woman Mary Harris was tried in Washington for shooting Clerk Burroughs at the Treasury. The jury rendered a Not Guilty verdict after ten minutes deliberation. Congressman Voorhees defended Harris, portraying her as innocent and a victim of a coercive relationship.
Miss Amelia Fransted, a 25-year-old, was attacked by Mrs. Terbune at Reynolds' Block in front of the Post Office. Terbune stabbed Fransted six times, including near the eye and throat, and then fled. Fransted is being treated by Dr. Reynolds with grave prospects for recovery. The incident occurred amid a July Fourth history recap from the Cleveland Herald.
