Letter From Erie July 25 1887 Big boom hinted yet progress noted

A perceptive note from Erie foresees a possible big boom, though not guaranteed. The city has grown from five to thirty-five thousand people since earlier decades, with thriving commercial houses and manufacturing establishments, while harbor benefits remain unfulfilled. The writer urges Erie to build on its solid base, enjoy safe living away from fires and epidemics, and remain a premier Lake Erie resort amid mid summer rest and nature’s moral uplift. Copious showers and a hot spell mark the period, with courts, a fraternal convention, and many picnics keeping Erie lively as Presque Isle Bay offers plentiful leisure.
