A New England family tale traces a prosperous merchant Burnet and his wife Mary through wealth and piety to a widowhood strained by four children. The mother’s misjudged emphasis on luxury and social status wrecks discipline, education, and faith, leading to bankruptcies, ruinous marriages, and lost souls.
The Southern Farmer argues that very large horses stumble and tire easily, while mid sized ones perform better. It cites Canadian horses hauling heavy carriages with ease and Maine horses pulling two man chaise wagons across rough hills. It praises compact muscle over excess weight and notes a town named Blacks & Whites in Nottoway County, Ya.
In Albany a theatre tale spans Edwin Forrest’s fiery rehearsal to a six minion brawl ending with the Roman hero on the floor. Another mischief wins the pirates and a Yankee tar, as the damsel vanishes, the curtain falls, and both scenes become part of the show.
Recollections recount the writing of Hail Columbia by Joseph Hopkinson in Philadelphia in 1798 during looming war with France.
