Century Ago: Spain and France in Louisiana Purchase Era

One hundred years ago Spain granted the United States free navigation of the Mississippi and New Orleans port. In 1800 Spain ceded the territory to France, raising fears of rapid colonization under Napoleon. Negotiations led by Monroe, Livingston, Pinckney yielded the Louisiana Purchase, doubling U.S. territory. Napoleon reportedly said he had given England a maritime rival. The Fourth of July 175 fell on a Saturday and John Jay began as New York governor with a July 4 banquet at Tontine Coffee House.

Superior Court appoints new judges amid regional criticism

Gov Hastings announced a seven member Superior Court bench led by Chief Justice Rice. Ex Governor Beaver of Bellefonte, Reeder of Easton, Orlady of Huntingdon, Wickham of Beaver, Willard of Scranton, and McCarthy of Philadelphia form the panel. Critics fault the selection for omitting Northwestern counties and urging a regional candidate. The Erie Dispatch condemns the move and calls for Northwestern representation at the convention. The Kentucky Democratic Convention backed sound money and endorsed Cleveland and Carlisle, while supporting Hardin as a Free Silver candidate.
