A vivid account of Siberian winter travel describes riders and horses enduring extreme cold. The convoy moves ten hours daily, with fur gear hindering movement and horses suffering ice in nostrils. Ice needles fill air as vapors surround the caravan and the tundra reshapes the landscape.
In Aug 1775 Captain Warrens of the Greenland whalership finds a ship wedged in north ice near 77° N. A gale frees the ice revealing a derelict vessel with a dead captain, a dying log, and a frozen crew including a woman and a boy. Warrens flees southward with the troubling record.
The narrative describes an English explorer who traced a disappeared ship by cross referencing inquiries about polar vessels with written documents. He identified the imprisoned ship and its doomed master, revealing the ship had lain frozen in Arctic ice for thirteen years before his discovery among the ice.
A remnant letter from 1651 describes sending a shipment of widows and maids to Virginia with conditions. It notes payment in tobacco and urges free marriages to freemen with means, plus notes on royal etiquette and a Spanish court anecdote about King Philip III and a loyal soldier.

A poor widow’s family Bible, saved from sale for debt on the Wabash, stopped the sheriff’s sale after she cut the cover to reveal two papers demanding five hundred pounds each. The Bible was restored to her, with her parents’ inscriptions praising faith and perseverance.
