Contested Writings and Mocked Claims in a Victorian Dispute
A return salvo ridicules a professor-like critic over a heated public article. The author defends sharp language while taunting alleged hypocrisy and noting prior bans and trials of ideas. References to Balaam, Mesmer, and clairvoyance punctuate a satire on intellectual pretensions.
Lafayette’s Senate and House reception described
The National Intelligencer reports that Lafayette was invited to a seat in both chambers. The Senate presented him with no address, then the President of the Senate invited him to sit on his right. The Speaker Clay delivered a moving address, Lafayette thanked the nation and recalled his long support for American liberty. The two houses then adjourned with members paying respects.

Political appointments and Hungarian exile note
In Albany the Senate named Ira P. Barnes clerk and Charles Lee sergeant at arms by party lines. The Assembly elected Jonas Heartt speaker, Sherman clerk, Caldwell sergeant at arms, and N. Chamberlain doorkeeper, all Whigs. A report from Africa notes Kossuth sisters arrested and jailed in Austria, provoking rhetoric on Austrian oppression and hopes for Hungarian liberty.
