Capitol Extensions and Outlook for a Grand Union Monument
The Washington Correspondent notes vast government spending on the Capitol extension in Washington. Two new wings 142 feet long will join the main building with corridors, forming a total width of 824 feet and a three acre area. Architects Walter and Strong plan proportional additions to echo the original style, with a lasting monument to the nation. The House wing will house desks for 130, and the Senate chamber will hold 100 desks, 29 windows, and seating for the full Senate once states reach fifty.

Irreverent Fragments Highlight 19th Century News Bits
A collage of 19th century notes covers varied topics from railroad progress to temperance, crime anecdotes, education, and social issues. The Belvidere Delaware railroad work advances toward Milford by mid February, while Georgia cotton goods gain Charleston export interest. Reports on prostitution in England, Moorish art, and Florence religious trends appear alongside humorous quips about whiskey, roses, and cider. The piece also notes Leicester and Cleveland health topics, maritime activity, and political jabs amid a broader stream of curiosity and commentary.
