Warren County Superintendents Report on Schools and Teachers

The county report lists school structures and furniture conditions, teacher ages, birthplaces, experience, and reading habits. It notes nine new schoolhouses, calls for cautious law changes, critiques director selection and wages, praises Warren borough Union school under Prof. C Twining, and recounts Cornplanter Indian School operations and a later moral tale about a surprise party.

Red War Waltz in Sleepy Hollow Parlor

Ben Johnston recalls entering a crowded room lit by glass lamps where white faced women with gold bands and gleaming bosoms promenaded. The music, a squalling German Porker, spurred dancing that ended in a chaotic tangle of bystanders and dancers as a daring night out turns to comic chaos.

Clergy and physicians musings on time and oats

An old Philadelphia‑area note compares clerical ease to medical practice with a jab about car rides. A pious reader recalls hymn lines about Canaan and Jordan. A Richmond Ohio reader, W H Ladd, advises sowing oats early on corn stubble to avoid rust, recommending no plow on good tillage and prior fall plowing on sod or foul ground.
