The Warren Mail reports muddy roads and a mild winter with little snow. The Warren Curling Club and Niagara Hose Company events loom, plus readings at Roscoe Hall and a Sheriff sale of Wooden Ware Works. Borough election tickets emerge from People’s, Democratic and Prohibition groups with mixed slates and several offices contested.
The Library Comedy Club performs at Roscoe Hall on Thursday evening February 28 for citizens and library funds. Tom Taylor’s three act Still Waters ran deep repeats, followed by the farce The Kitchen Belle with cast list and music by Roscoe’s orchestra. Admission 25 cents, reserved 35 cents. go early.
The Young Ladies Entre Nous Society of Warren presents an event at Roscoe Hall next Tuesday evening February 26. A short drama and music tableaux will entertain. admission is 25 cents with reserved seats at 35 cents. Proceeds aid the poor. organizers urge a full house.
The citizens committee of Womelsdorf near Reading raised about 3000 to purchase ten street lamps. They keep them lit to brighten the town and urge Warren to consider oil lamps if gas cannot be saved, asking for public spirited leadership to fund and install more lighting.
Stoneham Pa February 11 1878 report shows the Bugbee well near Stoneham produces about eight barrels per day since January 8 but not pumped every day. Oil men blame others for withholding production while local owner Toopie is in New York returning with a crew to drill on L Bildensperger farm joining the tract. Struthers Co leased Palmer White Co and aims to drill Monday hoping for gas rather than oil to light the tannery and nearby buildings.
In Pittsfield on February 15 and 16 teachers from Pittsfield and nearby areas met at the school building for a Local Institute. Mr. G G Sill chaired, Miss Emma Barton was secretary, and Supt. Thompson spoke on institute aims. The program included songs by Florence Coles ve Sadie Wilson Nellie Stright Maud and Elgin Waterhouse and an address by Supt. Thompson.
The Philadelphia and Erie Railroad, praised for disciplined management, shows freight as its main revenue with receipts of 2 638 697 55 and passenger income of 3872 562 56. Total earnings reach 3 172 992 70 while expenses total 2 049 627 34 yielding a net 1 123 365 85. riot losses from July amount to 51 271 42. Board members listed: Robert Thompson, Samuel G. Lewis, Wistar Morris, Strickland Barry, A J Derbyshire, Alexander Biddie, Samuel Gustine Thompson, J Alexander Simpson.
