A locomotive engineer on the Croydon Pallerton route spots a child on the tracks during a fierce storm. He risks his life, lifts the child to safety on the platform, and credits the stranger Jim Nelson for later reconciliation. Nelson seeks forgiveness and departs into the night. Postscript dates Kentucky January 11, 1868.
William Rogers marries Susan Gately on February 1, 868 after her father approves the match despite warnings. Jim Nelson, jealous of Susan, is knocked down a church steps by Susan’s father and leaves Rogers with persistent dread that the rival may harm his wife.
After a big snow storm a boy with a small shovel begins clearing a path to his grandmother's door. A passerby questions the effort but the boy replies that steady, persistent work makes large tasks shrink until completion.
A dying soldier affirms his faith in Christ and eternal love, while a blacksmith tests his apprentice by offering a choice of tasks after three months. The apprentice chooses to shut up shop for dinner, amid shared townsfolk wisdom.
